Jeopardy Episode 4/8/2014

During this episode of Jeopardy, Michelle Leppert tried to keep her championship, by defeating contestants, Derrick Shivar and Annalisa Srivatsan. The categories in the Jeopardy round were; Movies' Main Cities, Poetic Terms,  Food Labeling, American History, 7-Letter Words, and The Cullinan Diamond Mine.

Michelle Leppert started off the clues with Movies' Main Cities for $200. The clue was “The Cooler” and “Oceans' Eleven” to which the answer was, “What is Las Vegas.” Derrick got in on the action, at one point even stealing the $1000 dollar clue from Annalisa who incorrectly guessed Chicago for the clue which read, “Avalon” and “Diner.” The correct answer was, “What is Baltimore.”

Derrick picked American History for $200 and Annalisa nabbed that clue to start digging herself out of the $1000 hole she was in. Annalisa scored the Daily Double on the $400 clue for American History. She risked a $1000 bet on “In 1960 the U.S., stopped imports of sugar from this country, who was cozying up to the USSR.” The answer was, “What is Cuba.” She guessed correctly. Annalisa also snagged the $200 dollar clues for the Food Labeling category, but fell short on the $400 dollar clue which mentioned a reference to the % Daily Value as part of a 2,400 calorie diet. She answered “What is salt?” The correct answer should have been, “What is Sodium.” Derrick nabbed the $600 dollar clue for Food Labeling and moved on to American History for $600. No one was able to answer the clue correctly with “What are tobacco and liquor”, and Derrick moved to the $800 dollar clue. Derrick answered the clue incorrectly, which cost him $800. He kept his first place lead over Michelle by $600 dollars. The $1000 dollar clue for American History was snagged by Michelle. It read, He founded Rhode Island, the first colony to allow complete religious freedom. The answer was, “Who is Roger Williams.”

Michelle moved on to 7-letter words for $200. Derrick nabbed the clue and moved on to the $400 dollar clue. Michelle took the $400 clue and the show took a break. Back from the break, Alex Trebek took some time to chat with the contestants, and the Michelle started off with the $600 dollar clue for 7-letter words, to which she answered correctly with, “What is a Placebo.” She also got the $800 and $1000 dollar clues for 7-letter word which put her well in the lead over Derrick and Annalisa.

Michelle moved on to Food Labeling for $800, which Derrick promptly snagged with, “What is free-range,” referring to poultry that's been allowed access to the outside. Derrick moved on to The Cullinan  Mine for $200, and Michelle stole the clue with the quickest response and a correct answer. Derrick scored the $1000 dollar Food Labeling clue which read; “If food is labeled Kosher, this means that it has been prepared under the supervision of this person.” The answer was, “What is a Rabbi.” He then moved onto the $400 dollar clue for The Cullinan Mine section and no one attempted to guess the correct answer.

Annalisa was finally able to get on the board with the $600 and $800 dollar clues, but Michelle snagged the $1000 clue to round out the category. With less than a minute to go in the round Michelle went big for the $1000 dollar clue for Poetic Terms, which Derrick nabbed the answer for. Derrick also got the $200 and $400 dollar clues, but no one was able to guess the $600 dollar clue and the timer buzzed to end the Jeopardy round.

During the Double Jeopardy round the categories were as follows; 17th century thinkers, TV Cops, Statues, Over the “P.A.”, Long Walks on the Beach, and Taking in the Sun. Annalisa started off with Long Walks on the Beach for $400 which Michelle scored the right answer for. It referenced Atlantic City in New Jersey, which took a beating during Hurricane Sandy. Michelle got the $800 dollar clue as well, but Annalisa scored the $1200 dollar clue for this category. Derrick won the $1200 dollar clue, but the $2000 dollar clue stumped Annalisa who guessed incorrectly and lost a big chunk of her winnings.

Michelle scored the $400 dollar clue in 17th Century thinkers, but quickly moved on to T.V. Cops in which she also got the $400 dollar clue. Michelle scored huge in this category, winning the $800, $1200 and $1600 dollar clues. Derrick swooped in at the last to take the $2000 clue. He then moved back to 17th century thinkers, and Michelle grabbed the $800 dollar clue, but moved again to Statues. She got the $400 dollar clue, but Derrick took the $800 dollar clue with an answer, “What is Iwo Jima.”  Derrick also got the $1200 dollar clue, but stumbled on the Daily Double by not providing a specific enough answer. He guessed “What is the mermaid,” and the answer was actually “What is 'The Little Mermaid.” Annalisa scored big with the $2000 dollar clue for Statues with “Who is Duke Ellington.”

Michelle picked Over the “P.A.” and scored the $400 clue. Derrick won the $800 dollar clue in that category, and the moved back to 17th century thinkers. Derrick scored the $1200 dollar clue, but no one guessed the $1600 dollar clue. Derrick landed on the Daily Double for the $2000 dollar clue but fell flat again, without coming up with any sort of guess. The answer to the clue was, “Who is Spinoza,” referencing a Seminal Dutch thinker of the Enlightenment.

Derrick then moved on to Taking in the Sun for $800 which Michelle scored by guessing the outer most layer of the solar interior, her answer: “What is Convection.” Michelle jumped back to Over the “P.A.” and Derrick grabbed the $1200 dollar clue. Then Michelle guessed wrong on the $1600 dollar clue.

With less than a minute to go Derrick pulled the $2000 dollar clue for Over the “P.A.,” which he promptly answered correctly. He then pulled the $800 dollar clue for Taking in the Sun, which Michelle scored. Michelle then took the $1600 dollar clue, which she failed to answer correctly. Even with the setbacks Michelle and Derrick sat comfortably in the first and second place respectively.

The Final Jeopardy round focused on Music Makers. Both Michelle and Annalisa struggled, not able to come up with an answer to the clue. Annalisa lost all but a dollar, and Michelle dropped $12,000 dollars to finish in second place with $600. Derrick became the new champion with a win of $22,800.
